Vertonghen: Spurs need to play well for 90 minutes

Anybody that saw Tottenham’s loss against Chelsea at the weekend will have been amazed at how differently the team played over various stages of the match. Defender Jan Vertonghen is incredibly frustrated with Spurs’ inconsistency through the course of a fixture and has called on his teammates to perform well for ninety minutes.

While the 4-2 score line indicates that Spurs were well and truly beaten on Saturday, those that saw the game will recall a completely different story after the team managed to nudge themselves 2-1 ahead in the second half. Of course, it cannot be disputed that Chelsea played exceptionally well and would have been more than a match for anyone, yet Tottenham’s performance differed at so many points through the game that it was simply frightening to watch.

Bearing in mind the above, Vertonghen has moved to provide his assessment on the game. Speaking to the press the Belgium international said, “At home we seem to play better after half-time. We need to think about how to put two strong halves together.”

As well as speaking about the whole team, Vertonghen also moved onto William Gallas. It would be fair to say there has been a lot of attention focussed on the former Arsenal defender over recent days, after he was made to look foolish on a number of occasions to the hands of Chelsea’s flair players. However, Vertonghen remains defiant on his teammate and insists that he is still a very good player for the club. He said, “William is our captain and an important player. He always wants the best for me, even though we are both centre-backs. I really appreciate him.”

Following on from the above, Spurs are still in the top cluster of teams yet a gap is slowly starting to appear between them and the top three sides.

DAWSON MIGHT START

Michael Dawson could get a place in the starting line up of Tottenham Hotspur for the Capital One Cup match against Carlisle United which is going to be played on Wednesday at the Brunton Park.

At the start of the season, when Ledley King decided to retire from professional football, Dawson was named as the skipper of the team by the Tottenham manager Andre Villas Boas, but, surprisingly, the English centre back hasn’t been given the opportunity to play even a single match in the ongoing season so far.

Jan Vertonghen and William Gallas were preferred ahead of Dawson in the previous matches, but, both these defenders are supposed to be rested in Wednesday’s match. So, there is a good possibility of Dawson being given the opportunity to play his first match in the current season.

During the pre season transfer window, Dawson was approached by the authorities of QPR, but, the English defender didn’t accept their offer and opted to continue his tenure at Tottenham.

When asked about Dawson, the assistant coach of Tottenham Steffen Freund said, “Dawson hadn’t been getting the opportunity because of the presence of some fantastic defenders in the Tottenham squad. But, he is going to get his first opportunity against Carlisle and he will have to show that he deserves more chances. We will rest some of our key players in that match. So, some of the reserves will get the opportunity.”

When asked which player other than Dawson will be given the chance in that match, Freund said, “Steven Caulker is the other one who might be included in the starting XI on Wednesday.”

“Caulker is a special talent. He spent the last three seasons on loan and he is an improved player now. He is a very strong bloke and he has got a calm head on his shoulders. Tottenham certainly has massive hopes with this young lad.”

DAWSON IS NEW CAPTAIN

Tottenham are all set to name defender Michael Dawson as the next captain of the club. The captain of the club – Ledley King – recently announced his retirement from football after failing to recover sufficiently from the knee injury that has been troubling him for the last couple of seasons.

Michael Dawson has seen the replacement captain on a number of occasions. However, he is all set to be named as the permanent captain, as Tottenham look towards building for the future. The arrival of manager Andre Villas-Boas has been significant step in helping Tottenham remain in the top four positions.

The 28-year-old Michael Dawson is regarded as one of the best defenders at the club. He has been able to nail down a first-team spot under the previous managers when all other defenders have been inconsistent. Michael Dawson was absent for most of the last campaign after suffering from a long-term injury. Now, he is back into the first-team fold and is likely to lead the team out on the opening day of the season. Andre Villas-Boas has said that he has made the decision to make Michael Dawson the captain after discussing with the club.

“There are people who represent Tottenham’s past tradition and high values and that person without a doubt is Dawson. But it’s almost more up to the group to decide than the manager. It’s a difficult and sensible decision to make and I’ll be consulting Ledley and Michael on it. There’s different types of characters in the dressing room. But it will affect everybody in the dressing room who have to have empathy with the man going to lead them on the pitch,” said Andre Villas-Boas on of the pre-season tour of the United States. Tottenham will be playing Liverpool in a friendly match as part of the pre-season preparations.

DAWSON LEFT DISAPPOINTED

Tottenham defender Michael Dawson has revealed that extremely disappointed to have spent the majority of last season on the sidelines. As a result, he was unable to prevent Tottenham from finishing in the third position, which would have guaranteed them Champions League football this season.

Even though Tottenham, inspired by Gareth Bale, finished in the fourth position, they were ultimately triumphed to the prospect of playing in the European competition by Chelsea, who won the Champions League title this season. Michael Dawson has made only 13 appearances during the season for Tottenham, which has been one of his worst.

Tottenham missed a number of crucial players in the second half of the season especially Michael Dawson. Due to the absence of Ledley King, the absence of Michael Dawson from the first team became even more enormous. As a result, they were unable to prevent the form from sliding in the last three months of the campaign.

As a result of missing out on the Champions League football, Tottenham will now face uncertain future with regard to the future of star midfielders Jack Wilshere and Gareth Bale. Dawson has said that he is hoping to be fit and ready for the upcoming season.

“I’ll admit that I’m not my normal outgoing self when I’m injured – particularly when it is as long term like this one has been. The medics here are great and they try to keep you positive as well as putting you right. But I find it so hard. The worst thing is hearing all the banter as the lads go out to train and being stuck behind. I’ve certainly got to know Tom Huddlestone a lot better because he’s hardly played at all last season so he’s had it even harder than me,” said Michael Dawson on the official site of the club.

WALKER WANTS REDKNAPP TO STAY

Tottenham defender Kyle Walker has said that the club should be retaining the services of manager Harry Redknapp at all costs in order to challenge for the Champions League places once again next season.

Tottenham came ever so close to securing a spot in the Champions League next season, but the fact that Chelsea managed to win the competition will now put them into the Europa league. It has been always viewed as an unnecessary competition by many clubs due to the large number of games and lack of huge revenue from them. However, Kyle Walker says that he looks forward to playing in Europe next season with Tottenham.

Harry Redknapp has been a brilliant manager at Tottenham since his arrival four years ago. Even though there have been speculation linking him with a move to Chelsea and Liverpool recently, he has always said that he remains fully committed to Tottenham. A number of high profile players like Luka Modric and Gareth Bale are being linked with a move to clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Chelsea. Yet, Kyle Walker believes that the manager is far more important than the players because he has helped them attain this superior position.

“I definitely hope he stays at White Hart Lane. Who wouldn’t want him to stay at the football club when you look at the results he gets for us. I think anyone would want him around. I don’t think there’s a better manager. I try not to get distracted by speculation but, hopefully, he is around and I will be working with him next season. He ended the season as the highest-placed English manager in the League and he attracts players to the club as well,” said Kyle Walker. Many, though, will be pointing their fingers at Harry Redknapp for the late-season collapse.

PROVE OUR TITLE AMBITIONS

Tottenham midfielder Sandro has said that the club can prove that they have the title ambitions by beating Chelsea at White Hart Lane.

The club will be facing fourth placed Chelsea at White Hart Lane on Thursday night in a crucial encounter for both teams. Chelsea come under the match on the back of a draw with Wigan, which has all but finished their hopes of winning the title. Tottenham, on the other hand, comes on the back of a lacklustre win against Sunderland during the weekend. Tottenham have been excellent all season long when it comes to their attacking play, but they could only win by a solitary goal against Sunderland.

However, midfielder Sandro has said that they will prove that their current third position in the table is no fluke. Harry Redknapp will be without a number of crucial players for the visit of Chelsea. The most important player Tottenham will be missing will undoubtedly be Gareth Bale, who has been ruled out with an ankle injury. Further, Harry Redknapp will also be without Aaron Lennon, while Jermain Defoe has been rated as a doubt for this game. Ledley King played the whole match against Sunderland and he is likely to be touch and go for the match.

Chelsea will be extremely worried about the fitness of Brazilian duo Ramires and David Luiz. Progress has been one of the star performers for Chelsea this season, but he could miss the match with an ankle injury. “It can give us the belief that we can win the title. If we win this game, the only way will be up for us. We can make a big statement, although it will be a very difficult game. Yes, we can win the title. Why not?” asked midfielder Sandro.
